How Do You Secure a Software Supply Chain?

When we think of supply chains, we often think of physical goods. But, in the wake of recent cyber attacks, that term is quickly being recontextualized. The White House’s executive order on the importance of enhancing software supply chain security underscores that point in bold, large print.
Recently, the Decibel CISO Council, which includes more than 25 security leaders from companies such as Flex, Marqeta, Robinhood and Starbucks, met to discuss the executive order. The topics included the possible implications of the SBOM requirements, role of NIST and learnings from FedRamp.
Ultimately, the Decibel CISO Council agreed that the future of software development as a profession is helping people to build, write and certify safer supply chains. For those of us on the cutting edge of software, we’ll have to navigate the delicate balance of innovation and regulation, velocity and vigilance, and finding ways to disrupt industries without creating vulnerabilities.
